Me Time

time for meI still attend Weight Watcher Meetings even though I have reached my goal weight because I always find them motivating and extremely educational. Last week’s meeting was about “Me Time” and the advice they gave sounded very much like my Top 100 List (of ways to love myself). Once again the experts agree that pampering ourselves is important to a healthy lifestyle.

Our assignment for the week was to try at least one of the following “Me Time” ideas from eight different categories.

• Sensory (listen to music with earphones; wander virtually through museums via ARTSY; bathe by candlelight)
• Relaxing (turn off your phone for ten minutes, breathe slowly for two minutes; massage your scalp)
• Creative (paint a watercolor; write a poem after checking out Poetry Idea Engine; Make a vision board or scrapbook)
• Outdoorsy (go bird watching; bask in the sun; collect autumn leaves)
• Social (go to the movies with a friend; email an old high school friend; look at your wedding album)
• Brainy (do a word puzzle; learn a phrase or two in a new language; read a short story)
• Rejuvenating (buy yourself flowers; make your screen saver a beach or mountain scene)
• Fun (doodle in a coloring book; hit up a yard sale or two; play cards)

Taking precious “Me Time” has helped me change a dreary perspective to a more positive one on more than one occasion. If I can just step away from whatever is making me blue or is making me angry or frustrated, I have a better chance of dealing with it constructively and in a healthy way. How can you not feel better after massaging your scalp for a few minutes? Or when there are pretty flowers on your desk? Or when you are listening to great music?

Have you created your own Top 100 List or list of “Me Time” ideas? Try doing one thing from your list each day for a week. Let me know what you tried and how it helped you on your self care journey.
